ABOUT FACULTY of ARCHITECTURE, ITU
The Faculty of Architecture is one of the oldest faculties of the University. Instruction in architecture started in 1928 at the Higher School of Engineering, where classes for civil engineering & architecture were held jointly during first three years. The Department of Architecture had its first graduates in 1931. By 1936, students were given an examination after initial two years of the common program, for selection into the programs in architecture. A separate six year program for architecture was launched in 1940. The curriculum was revised in 1944 after the school was transformed to Istanbul Technical University, the department gaining the status of Faculty, & duration of studies was reduced to ten semesters. An overhaul of the programs was implemented between 1955 & 1990 when new courses were developed. An administrative reorganization was carried out in 1973 creating five academic divisions & thirteen chairs. Undergraduate & post-graduate study system was developed in 1969-1970 by the University & Faculty of Architecture adjusted its program in 1974-1975, whereby the duration of undergraduate study was reduced to four years. The faculty changed from chair system to departmental organisation in 1982 & Departments of Architecture, City & Regional Planning were established. There are four divisions in the Department of Architecture. These are Architectural Design, Building Technology, Restoration, History of Architecture. Graduate study is currently pursued at the Institute of Science & Technology, Institute of Information Technology & Institute of Social Sciences. |
