GİRNE & OLD HARBOUR
Situated on the north coast of Cyprus, Girne, with its 6,000 year long history, unique remains of countless civilisations, miles of natural beaches, calm sea, and mild climate is an idyllic Mediterranean town. Bounded to the north by the sea and to the south by the greenery of the Beşparmak (Fivefinger) Mountain range, it offers the most magnificent scenery on the island.

Girne's charming and tiny harbour, full of yachts and fishing boats, is framed by the colossal hulk of its Crusader castle. With the backdrop of the jagged mountains behind and the calm sparkling sea in front, the harbour has an intoxicatingly serene atmosphere. The beautiful harbour is dominated by the majestic Girne Castle which houses a museum containing the remains of the one of the oldest ancient ships salvaged from the sea.

Overlooking the entrance to the harbour is Girne Castle. Dating from the time of the Byzantines, its massive defences surround a complex mixture of building styles from centuries before and it is likely that there was a Roman fort here originally. Subsequently enlarged and strengthened by the Lusignans and then the Venetians, the castle is now home to many historical artefacts and is the current resting-place of the world's oldest shipwreck.

BÜYÜK HAN / THE GRAEAT INN
From a historical and architectural perspective, Büyük Han is the most noteworthy of the Turkish monuments in Nicosia. It is acknowledged to have been constructed by the first Ottoman governor of Cyprus, governor-general Muzaffer Pasha in 1572. The building is rectangular and has two storey; the rooms ringing a large courtyard open to an arched and domed pavilion. The inn has been constructed with stones transported from different buildings and places. Likewise, it is possible that the marble columns supporting the small mosque in the middle of the courtyard have been taken from another building. This small, domed mosque with its conic, hexagonal stone chimneys complements the inn´s Turkish style of architecture. The rooms on the ground floor were used as shops, store-rooms and offices. The rooms on the upper floor with fireplaces with octagonal chimneys were the bedrooms. Although the inn is very similar to the ones in Anatolia one difference can be noticed: whereas these types of inns and caravanserais in Anatolia usually have only one main entrance, the Great Inn has another.

KARPAZ (KARPAS) PENINSULA
Karpas peninsula is the easternmost part of the island of Cyprus, where the land tapers into a thin strip which stretches out towards Turkey. The area is rich in subterranean water reservoirs and thus crops such as tobacco are grown in abundance. Another main source of income in the region is fishing. Boğaz and Kumyalı are the fishing centres in the Karpas.

As well as numerous Byzantine churches, the most notably the Monastery of Apostolos Andreas, the area boasts some of the finest countryside in the countryside. The Karpas peninsula has been called the nature reserve of Cyprus for birds, wild flowers, and sea fossils are to be found everywhere.  Moreover, numerous picturesque beaches, both sandy and rocky, are said to be the best in the whole island. With also pine, cypress and maquis covered hills reaching an altitude of about 1,000 metres makes the Karpas region almost a perfect natural reserve site of the whole island.

GAZİMAĞUSA / FAMAGUSTA
The city of Famagusta (Gazimağusa/Mağusa in Turkish) is one of the finest examples of mediaeval architecture in the eastern Mediterranean and, in its present state of preservation, is equal to that of the old cities of Carcassone and Ragusa (Dubrovnik).

The town of Famagusta (Gazimağusa) was originally a small commercial port and fishing village. Its strategic position on the east-west trading routes led to its development in the thirteenth century by the Lusignans, and it became a major commercial centre. With its 365 places of worship (that is, a different one for each day of the year), and its palaces belonging noblemen, it rose to become one of the richest cities in the Mediterranean.

Like the capital, Nicosia (Lefkosa), Famagusta (Gazimağusa) is a walled city with an old a new town. The finest architectural works of art are to be found on the walls and include the Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque (St Nich‘ Cathedral), the Namik Kemal Prison, the Tomb and Museum Cambolat, and remains of numerous churches.

The new town of New Famagusta (Yeni Magusa), also known Maraş, lies just to the south of the walled city.
