About Northern Cyprus

Northern Cyprus, officially the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), is located in the eastern Mediterranean on the northern part of the island of Cyprus. The island has a rich cultural history shaped by Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Lusignan, Venetian, Ottoman and British civilizations.

The region offers a unique combination of Mediterranean beaches, historical towns, castles and traditional villages. Major cities include Nicosia (Lefkoşa), Kyrenia (Girne), Famagusta (Gazimağusa), and Morphou (Güzelyurt).

Visitors can experience historic walled cities, medieval castles, monasteries and beautiful coastlines within short travel distances.

Transportation

By Air

The main international airport serving Northern Cyprus is:

  • Ercan International Airport (ECN)

Most international flights operate via Türkiye. Common routes include:

  • Istanbul → Ercan
  • Ankara → Ercan
  • Izmir → Ercan
  • Antalya → Ercan

Airlines operating these flights include:

  • Turkish Airlines
  • Pegasus Airlines
  • AJet / AnadoluJet
  • SunExpress

Flight duration from Istanbul is approximately 1 hour 30 minutes.


By Sea

Northern Cyprus can also be reached by ferry from Türkiye.

Main ferry routes:

  • Mersin → Famagusta (Gazimağusa)
  • Taşucu → Kyrenia (Girne)

Travel time:

  • Fast ferry: 2–3 hours
  • Standard ferry: 6–8 hours

Transportation Inside Northern Cyprus

Car

Car rental is the most common way to travel around the island. Driving is on the left side of the road, similar to the UK.

Typical rental price:

  • 30–60 € per day

Buses (Dolmuş)

Shared minibuses connect major cities:

  • Lefkoşa – Girne
  • Lefkoşa – Gazimağusa
  • Lefkoşa – Güzelyurt

They are affordable but run less frequently than in large cities.

Taxi

Taxis are available in cities and tourist areas but are relatively expensive.


Visa Requirements

Most visitors do not need a visa in advance.

Entry rules:

  • Passport holders of many countries receive visa on arrival.
  • Turkish citizens can enter with ID card or passport.
  • Typical allowed stay: 30–90 days.

Visitors entering via Türkiye usually complete immigration procedures at Ercan Airport.

Northern Cyprus has a Mediterranean climate.

Spring (March–May)

  • 18–25 °C

Summer (June–September)

  • 28–35 °C

Autumn (October–November)

  • 20–28 °C

Winter (December–February)

  • 10–18 °C

Light clothing is recommended in summer, while evenings may require a light jacket.


Language

Official language: Turkish

Widely spoken languages:

  • English (very common)
  • Greek (in some areas)

Because of tourism and universities, many people speak English fluently.

Currency used in Northern Cyprus:

  • Turkish Lira (TRY)

However, many places also accept:

  • Euro (€)
  • British Pound (£)

  • Credit cards accepted in most hotels and restaurants
